Sapphire Alpacas was started in 2006 by Val Tew and Paul Stead. We had been keeping sheep on our 21 acre smallholding since 2003 but looking for a new direction to take and after much research we decided that alpacas fit the bill. Val Tew has spent her entire life around animals; she is dog groomer of 30 years experience and has been breeding her Bargeway Keeshonds for a similar length of time with great success - exporting to Europe, Australia and America. She is believed to be the only Keeshond Breeder in the UK to have bred a dog that was champion in 7 European countries. Paul Stead has also spent his entire life around livestock, having been a Dairy Farm/Herd Manager for the majority of his adult life, specialising in the breeding and nutrition of high-yielding dairy cows. We have combined our knowledge, experience and ability to create and manage our herd of alpacas. We have both completed the Foundation Level Training Course on Showing and Judging run by the British Alpaca Society, Camelidynamics Basic and Advanced run by Julie Taylor-Brown, and the Basic and Advanced Alpaca Fibre Production and Measurement run by Cameron Holt. Paul Stead was Chairman of the Heart of England Alpaca Group, and has sat on the Welfare and the Shows Committee of the Alpaca Society, as well as orgainising the BAS National Show for one year, the Spring Alpaca Fiesta for 3 years and the Autumn National Fleece Show for 4 years.
